Are Expensive Skincare Products Better Than Cheaper Alternatives?

Celebrities, Beauty Gurus and Aestheticians often have the most lavish beauty routines that consist of name brands with name brand prices. I am a bit nosey when it comes to skincare, so I love watching what other people do. People who can afford this expensive skincare routines always seem to have great skin. But I’ve also seen people share there inexpensive skincare routine and still have porcelain skin. So here’s a question, are expensive products better than cheaper ones?

I am a firm believer that you can get good skin care products at any price. You don’t have to shell out a fortune to achieve great skin. I find some cheaper alternatives work just as good and dare I say better than some of the more expensive things I’ve used.

With that being said, the key to higher-end products is in the quality of the ingredients used. For example, a great moisturizer at a cheaper price may contain Glycerin; a cheap but effective plant-based humectant that pulls water from its environment to hydrate another. A higher-end product should contain Hyaluronic Acid in its place because it is an ingredient found in the skin, higher quality than the plant-derived one.

These days though, you can find cheaper alternatives that have pure ingredients. Take the Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid + B5 which retails for 8$ at the most. I’ve used this for a long time and it does wonders for the skin.

Compared to the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench that costs 83$. I’ve used this for 3 months and find its consistency to be much thinner and smoother. It definitely is a higher quality HA but I’ve been able to adequately hydrate the skin with both of the products.

THE KEY HERE IS NOT THE PRICE OF THE PRODUCT, BUT THE QUALITY OF THE INGREDIENTS

When you’re looking for products its nice to compare what ingredients they have and what they claim to do for the skin. Get to know the ingredients that affect your skin and read the description. Actively use for phone when you’re looking in the beauty aisle so you can read reviews, ingredients to looks for or stay away from and compare right there and then.

*Tip: The first 5 ingredients listed on the ingredient list are the most potent. Anything listed after preservatives make up just about 1% of the entire product.
