May Skincare Update 2019
I wanted to give you guys a little update on the condition of my skin. To truly see how far you’ve come it is important to take a look at where you’ve been. This time last year I went through the worst breakout of my life. It literally lasted for 5 months and kept intensifying. As someone who had never had a lot of acne even throughout my teen years, I had no idea what was going on. It all started when I got my first full time job in an office. It escalated so quickly and so badly, I was so ashamed of my skin and had anxiety over going outside without covering up my face.
If you follow my YouTube Channel, you’d remember this from my I Tried FRESH Aloe Vera On My Face for 7 Days back in April 2018. The skin itself was getting better but I was still experiencing some major sores like the one that just exploded on my face. I cleaned it out with Hydrogen Peroxide, applied Polysporin to it and placed a bandaid on my lesion. I left it on overnight to heal and in two days it had flattened and the skin was no longer open. I truly thought that the worse was over but this was only the beginning.
The aloe really cleared up my skin so I decided to give another natural product a try. I whipped out my honey jar and got to work. This is in May when I posted my I Tried A Honey Mask for 10 Days & Here’s What Happened To My Skin. My skin went through these phases of “purging” where my skin would get good, then bad then clear then messed up. It was an emotional roller coaster. My skin healed very nicely but I noticed in the first 4 days I broke out in a rash. In hindsight, I realize that my skin had an allergic reaction to the honey. Through deductive reasoning, I have found it is because of the type of honey I used. I am allergic to pollen and regular honey may contain traces of pollen. Most likely this did. I opted for Forest Honey and tried it again with no reaction. My skin really did clear up again using this.
The worst thing about acne is that it plays you. It really tricks you into thinking that things are getting better then all of a sudden it comes back again. Around this time was when I tried the Dr. Belmure Advanced Skincare Solutions trio in September 2018 and my skin did not like it at all. My skin was so red and irritated there was literally no smooth part of my face. I believe it was because the trio was too moisturizing for me so it did not allow my skin to breathe. Acneic bacteria thrives in a pore that is void of oxygen and that was exactly what I was giving to my skin. This time I really started doing some heavy researching on what causes acne, what ingredients aggravate it, how to alleviate it and how to prevent it. I was done trying product simply because others say it works. I started listening to my skin and being careful about what I applied to it.
In October I gave into the many reviews, insta videos I was seeing about this one hyped Korean Beauty product. I was so skeptical about it. I had been seeing the promotion since May but never ordered it. All my research lead me back to this product. With my newfound skincare knowledge, I decided to bite the bullet and try it out for myself. This is when I tried the SomeByMi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle treatment. I tried it for 6 weeks just to make sure. My skin looked so much better. It healed so nicely. What I love is that it put me on a trajectory towards good skin.
The one thing I was most afraid of was that I would have to use this product for the rest of my life. I am someone who loves skincare and trying new products so I didn’t want to feel trapped by one thing. It may sound ridiculous for most people who don’t obsess over skincare products as much as I do, but for beauty junkies like myself I’m sure you understand where I am coming from. After the 6 weeks, I stopped using the SomeByMi period and my skin still looked clear.
Every once in a while, around my period I go back to my trusty Trio to ensure that my skin continues on this positive journey because my hormones and periods really affect my skin. What I had to change most was how I thought of my skin. When I stressed about it, my skin reflected that anxiety. I had to change the way I think and truly project positivity inwards to see a difference outwards.
By no means is my acne completely gone, I still break out from time to time but my skin looks a lot better now. Without advocating for a specific product or remedy because everyone’s skin is different, I focused on a few key things :
Exfoliating the skin with a BHA so it unclogs the pores without being abrasive and helps control oil production. I specifically use SomeByMi AHA BHA PHA 30 day miracle which is basically a chemical exfoliator.
Reducing redness and inflammation with an ice compresses or hydrocortisone.
Killing acne causing bacteria with honey, tea tree oil, or benzoyl peroxide.
And hydrating the skin (aloe is really great for this), hyaluronic acid is a great choice as well. I am a firm believer that the skin is designed to heal itself so long as it is in a moisturized environment.
Every so often I reevaluate my skin to ensure that I am taking care of my skin’s “right now” needs because I’ve learned how to assess my skin. Sometimes when I find I a pimple claw its way to the surface, I go down the list of causes and usually find the culprit. I re-evaluate, change and keep it pushing.
My skin is not perfect and I have a long way to go on this journey to clear skin, but we can call this a checkpoint. That’s what worked for me. So far so good
