Do you use Body Oil Before or After Body Lotion?

When it comes to layering your products, it's always thinnest, thickest, but what about your body? I've seen a lot of people put body oil before, body lotion. I've seen it done the other way around. Let's put it to the test to see which one gives the best result.

The products I'm using today are Baby Oil and the Neutrogena Hydro Boost. These are two of my favourite body products. They're both non-scented. Free. Like they're just gorgeous. I've been using these for years. If you don't know now, you know.

OIL ON DAMP SKIN

I started off putting the baby oil on wet skin first. Now from science class, we'll note that oil and water don't mix. So I did end up feeling this emulsive, silky texture on my skin. Similarly to when you're using a cleansing balm or a cleansing oil on your face and you add water to rinse. It also left water droplets on my skin and took a little bit of time for it to soak in. Once it soaked in, it immediately left my skin feeling very silky as well as very shiny. You are going to end up staying wet for a little bit as this absorbs.

LOTION ON DAMP SKIN

When I tried the lotion first, I did find that on wet skin, something about lotion just takes forever to rub in. I don't usually put lotion on my face when it's wet. I usually start off with a toner or some sort of serum just to have a layer between, and I think that with the body, it works exactly the same way. It took a little bit longer. Blended into my skin, but it didn't leave any like stickiness or any residue on my skin, like there was when I put the oil first.

LOTION ON OIL

Okay. So that was the initial result. Now, when I went in with the second layer, I was actually really surprised. I layered my lotion on top of the now soaked in oil and oh my God, my skin just drank it up. Like it looks nice and silky and it doesn't feel greasy, there is no thick layer of oil on my skin because it was already soaked in deeper by the water.

OIL ON LOTION

Okay. On the other hand, where I put the lotion first and then the oil on top, I did end up with a really shiny finish and you could feel like there was oil on your body. I don't personally like that because when I put on my clothes afterwards, I just feel like it gets everywhere and I have white sheets, so it would rub off on my sheets, right? And I don't wanna do that.

10 MINUTES LATER

After 10 minutes my body is completely dry. Now, just looking at it, you don't really see a difference. However, when I touch it, even though I'm using the exact same products, order does really matter. On the oil first and lotion side, it still feels like… skin. And I found I didn't have to use as much product as I did when I put on the lotion first. Something about the oil just allows it to smooth all over my body. On the side where I put the lotion first, it doesn't feel as silky. After 10 minutes, there is a big difference.

Overall, I would say that the best method to lotion your skin would be body oil first and then moisturizer for these reasons:

  1. you use less product.

  2. Your skin feels much more moisturized. For longer as it locks in hydration.

  3. You don't feel like there's this greasy mess on your skin. The oil turned into an emulsification and it absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin, so there's no oily residue.

All right, so I will be oiling then moisturizing from now on.
