I Tried Ovira: The Little Device for Period Pain

Period pain is a part of the game but it doesn’t have to be as painful thanks to this little device called the Noha by Ovira. This device uses electric waves (TENS unit) to interrupt your pain receptors so you don’t have to feel the brunt of your cramping pain.

I tried this out on my last period and today, I’m share with you my experience using this device.

Inside the box

  • the Noha

  • 2 love handle pads

  • 1 USB charger cable

  • 4 Replacement pads

  • 1 Lovehandle Storage Disk

  • 1 cable

  • the manual

  • a little pouch

You can also purchase additional love handles sticky pads (I think that’s such a cute name). One thing I would mention, before putting this on, wipe off your body with the baby wipes or an alcohol swab to make sure that your body doesn’t have any moisture on it, because these will not stick if you do.

Things To Know

Ovira has a money-back guarantee. You have 100 days from receiving your Ovira box to begin your return. So if you find out it doesn’t really work for you, you can send it back and get a full refund, which is pretty cool.

The device is an egg shape (like an ovary) it has a on button in the centre and a plus and minus button on either side to adjust the frequency.

Then it has a little clip on the back so you can clip it on your pants or on your bra and that makes it discreet and travel friendly.

How To Use

You’ll want to stick this on your body around 10 inches apart. You can use this on your stomach for your abs, your shoulders, or your lower back (for back pain).

I did end up using it once before on my lower back before my period so the sticky bit wasn’t as sticky as the first time around. I generally use a heat pack that wraps around my body and I put this on top of it just like my physiotherapist does, and the stickiness was fine. Even after the heat pack had called down, the stickiness was still on my body and I didn’t have any further issues with it. So I would recommend after every second or third period Go ahead and change that sticky pad so it’s adhesive once more.

The best way to stick this for mobility and ease would be to clip the Ovira on your bra strap between your boobs, so that there isn’t this a long cord flapping about it’s a lot more comfortable that way

My Experience

The Noha device has 40 levels of intensities you can customize it to suit the strength of your period. Mine usually stays around a level four or five, I don’t generally like to go higher than that unless I feel a really big cramp. I can handle more intensity when it comes to putting this on my back but on my stomach, when I put it up too high, I felt the pulses in my thigh and in my abs, so that was really odd. You will know what is the right intensity for you. When it’s too high, I can actually feel it all the way down my legs to my toes. It’s not uncomfortable it’s just an unusual tingling sensation.

Beyond that the pulsations faded into the background and it wasn’t something that I was acutely aware of all day long.

Q & A

  • Can I use Ovira on my back? Yes, this device can be used in multiple places including your shoulders, abdomen and back

  • Can you wear Ovira to sleep? While I haven’t personally worn it while sleeping, it can definitely be worn. For most people, while sleeping they wont’t feel cramps but feel free to use while falling asleep or even wearing it overnight and pain-free sleep.

  • Ovira how to replace Love handles? Simple peel away the sticky part on the Love Handle, it is a thick gel that peels off easily. Using the refills, place on top of the clean Love Handle, peel off the sticker and stick to the accompanied plate to store.

  • How to charge Ovira? The device comes with a 3ft cord, with a USB attachment. Simply plug it into an adapter to charge.

  • Ovira what does it feel like? The current feels like a constant tingling sensation. At low frequency it fades into the background, at higher frequencies, you will feel a slight pressure but its like a massage.

What it Will do and What it Won’t Do

Now, there are a plethora of symptoms that you can feel throughout your cycle, not just during your period. I’ve been reading many books on this topic to fully understand The menstrual cycle and physiology of the female reproductive system. And what I found is that it is not normal to be debilitated by your period symptoms. Often these pain symptoms are dismissed because they are “female problems.” What it actually means, is that there’s some sort of irregularities, whether that be a hormonal imbalance or something else going on in your body that needs to be attended to.

For some reason, I always thought our body just hates us and we just need to endure this pain for some reason, but honestly, that’s not the truth. It doesn’t have to be painful and if this sounds like you, definitely speak to a specialist, whether that be a hormonal specialist, your general doctor or your gynaecologist, about what’s going on so they can recommend ways that you can find long lasting relief.

For someone like myself, who doesn’t generally like messing with my body in terms of taking medication - if I can avoid it - I don’t take birth control, I try not to take ibuprofen - as little as possible - I don’t even like regular medicine, with the Ovira being a non-invasive method of managing your pain, I think this is genius and I don’t know where this has been my entire life!

With that being said, it’s not gonna get rid of your period. You’re still gonna feel like you’re on your period, if you feel nauseous it’s not gonna solve that. What it’s gonna help is with the muscle pain and the cramping. If that is what you were looking for, some sort of relief on that front, I would say this is a great investment.

I’m going to be continue to use the Noha because I definitely find it very helpful for my period and I would recommend trying that if it is something that you’re interested in.
